Protecting Thermal Sights

Hey all.

Note: I'm not planning on getting thermals in the near future, but the engineer in me just has gotta get an answer for this or I'm not getting any sleep till I find out.

For those of you with thermals, how do you protect it from bbs? I know Lexan and polycarbonate all severely limit the effectiveness of the sight. I've read that sapphire glass, silicon, and germanium (I know right, what the hell is germanium and where the hell am I gonna get a sheet of it?!) won't drastically reduce the effectiveness, but that's all internet speak, so I take it as a grain of salt.

So that begs the question; for those of you who own these magnificent pieces of kit, how do you protect them (if at all)?

Thanks for helping satisfy my curiousity.
