Don't watch the show so I can't say for sure. Definitely plausible since this technique is becoming more popular because it's a lot cheaper. Rental automatic weapons for theatre are expensive with a capital E, not to mention more dangerous than airsoft.
Easy way to tell - see if there are shell casings dropping from the stock when they fire. Anyone know?

Vondnik is correct as far as I know. As to the shell casings, that's no way to tell at all. They can be added in almost as easily as the muzzle flash
-although it's true that it's an often overlooked detail, many vfx artists are little spaghetti-armed girlie men who know nothing of actual firearms.
